Entertainer of the Moment

Two times a year. That’s when a tv is a necessity in my book. I could live without it every other day of the year if I had too. Last night was one of those nights. The Academy of Country Music awards, better known as the ACM’s was on. At this point in the game, I’m not sure why I even bother watching at all anymore. For the past 5-10 years or so it’s been a major disappointment but alas, every 6 months I gear up in hopes for a change.

I just knew that last night was going to be different. Reba and Blake Shelton were hosting again after a super successful job last year. Taylor Swift would not be performing which meant no channel changing; it was gearing up to be an awesome show. I should have known better. While there were some fantastic performances and well deserved winners I am just thoroughly disappointed with award shows now. It’s become one big glorified television concert. They give out maybe 5 awards now in a 3 hour time block and the biggest award of the night, Entertainer of the Year, is voted on by fans. Let me explain to you why that is a complete joke. This award used to be based on concert sales, concert performance, record sales, radio play, etc. Not anymore! It’s a skewed popularity contest where tween girls have nothing better to do than sit at their computers all afternoon because the cool boys in school won’t call them so they vote for Taylor Swift nonstop because she knows what it’s like to be dumped by a mean boy. She is not a role model for young girls! I will not let my daughter think its okay to date a string of guys and then write a mean song about them when they dump her. It’s not okay nor is it proper manners to boast about doing so. Why are we condoning this girl dating every celeb guy and writing nasty break up songs about them? Tell me why this is okay. This is precisely why people under the age of 18 cannot vote in elections. If they did we’d be looking at Taylor Swift or Justin Beiber as our next Commander in Chief.

The two highlights of the night were Ashton Kutcher belting out I Cross My Heart and Blake Shelton making fun of Taylor Swift’s “shock” face. I almost miss the days where Kenny Chesney won Entertainer of the Year every year. Almost. I guess it’s become too much to ask for fans to care about true talent and good country music. Slap on a skimpy outfit, dance seductively on stage, write a mean song about someone, and voila! You’re a marketable money maker. Sad.
